It was opened in 1797, and remained under the control of the original company until 2003. It is now run by Essex Waterways Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Inland Waterways Association. ==Route== The navigation runs from Springfield Basin in Chelmsford to the sea lock at Heybridge Basin near Maldon.
